I then lowered it (the fuel tank) until I could get my hand in to reach the electrical connector on top of the tank. I attached a small pair of vise grips to the hydraulic release valve on the small jack that I used to hold up the tank. I also used the frame crossmember in the picture to keep leverage on the ratchet so it wouldn't slip off of the nut. I began loosening the bolts that hold the retaining brackets to the fuel tank. (please read further notes on photo)Īfter removing as much fuel as possible. I inserted the other end into the gas can, and began pumping. If so pull it out before inserting the hose. (There is a instruction in the how-to about this that says there is a ball check valve in this hole. (this can take a minute but just keep pulling while trying not to rock the vehicle.Rocking BAD) I inserted the IN hose of my siphon pump into the large hole. I then twisted and pulled the tubes from the plastic fuel tank fittings. I used a long flat tipped screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps from the fill tubes.that go from the gas cap down into the fuel tank. I also used some absorbent material to soak up any I did spill) I disconnected the fuel lines (being sure not to spill too much fuel by covereing the ends with rags. Once the Car was lifted into the position I desired, I set up my other jack to hold up the fuel tank and take the strain off the retaining brackets while I removed them. It is necessary to jack it up slowly to prevent unwanted movement. I did start this with a 2 ton jack but moved to a larger one when I couldn't get it up high enough. Here is a photo of the lift point that I used. Then I used a floor jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and placed jack stands at the highest level possible (on a hard flat and level surface), underneath the frame of the vehicle. Setup: I chocked the front wheels, set the parking brake and wedged something large between the front seat and the brake pedal.
